Panelists share their experiences with students at the panel on “How the Humanities Shape My Perspective on Medicine.” The panelists included Dr. Debbie Deere, a physician who majored in French and Psychology; third-year medical student Joe DeLoach, who majored in English and Biology; premedical student Madison Whaley, who is also majoring in English; physician Dr. Susan Portis Ferguson, who studied English; and Dr. William Wilson, a dentist who studied Art and Biology.Taking a humanistic approach to medicine can equip upcoming healthcare and social service professionals with enhanced empathy and awareness towards patients and individuals, while also empowering them with the skills to reflect critically on their own encounters. This minor is well-suited not only for aspiring healthcare providers, but also for students across various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. It caters to those intrigued by delving into areas such as the historical, social, and cultural influences shaping medical institutions and treatments; patient advocacy; medical ethics and law; narrative medicine; as well as art, music, or narrative therapies.
